SALT Report 1171 – The Tennessee Department of Revenue has released instructions for taxpayers requesting a sales tax refund. The instructions are intended to provide taxpayers with information regarding relief options available to those affected by the storms, tornadoes,straight-line winds, and flooding that occurred in Tennessee between March 23, 2011 and May 12,2011.
Who Qualifies for the Refund?
Individuals who receive disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as a result of the storms are entitled to a refund of the sales tax paid on eligible items purchased to replace or repair damaged items.
Eligible Items and Restrictions:
- Major appliances must be under $3,200
- Furniture must be under $3,200
- Building supplies with a sales price of $500 or less per item
- Must be purchased between March 23 and December 31, 2011
- The maximum refund allowed is $2,500
Certain items purchased by a contractor to use when making repairs may also be claimed by the individual so long as the contractor provides an invoice listing the items purchased and the amount of Tennessee sales tax paid on those purchases. All claims must be filed with the Department of Revenue by February 29, 2012.
