Vermont – Tax Advisory Board Created

SALT Report 1368 – The Vermont Department of Taxes announced the formation of the Vermont Tax Advisory Board. VTAB was created to advise the Tax Commissioner on issues related to tax administration for all tax types, including personal income tax, corporate income tax, and sales and use tax. The purpose of the board will be to:

  • Provide a public forum for communication between Vermont’s Commissioner of Taxes and representatives of the public interested in Vermont tax administration and policy,
  • Provide ideas, input and perspective to the Commissioner, assisting her in developing tax policy and identifying improvements in the administration of taxes, and
  • Provide constructive observations regarding current or proposed policies

The agenda will include topics considered important but not urgent. Topics may include any area or issue of interest to board members, but will not include specific taxpayer matters. Topics the board will cover include:

  • Audit practices
  • Federal tax developments impacting the state
  • Development and release of technical bulletins
  • Responses to court decisions
  • Modernization of the tax law
  • Communication issues
  • The status of on-going projects,and
  • Tax policy matters

The Department is seeking applications from tax professionals and those with a broad background in tax policy, public policy, Vermont’s business community, and consumer advocacy. The board will meet quarterly beginning in May 2012.
