SALT Report 1595 – The Hawaii State Legislature recently passed legislation that changes the way businesses obtain their tax clearance notices. Currently, the Department of Taxation requires taxpayers to obtain a tax clearance notice as a part of the bid process for government contracts or to receive their final payment from a government contract. The Department provides these notices to taxpayers free of charge.
However, as of July 1, 2012, the Department of Taxation began charging a $20 fee for each tax clearance application submitted and $5 for each certified copy of a tax clearance. These fees will create an estimated $1,000,000.00 in additional revenue for the state.
