SALT Report 1631 – The Texas Comptroller of Accounts reminds taxpayers that their tax amnesty program, Project Fresh Start, will end on August 17, 2012. During the amnesty period, June 12 through August 17, 2012, taxpayers can avoid penalties and interest by filing or amending tax returns and paying any overdue taxes.
How to apply for the amnesty program:
- File an original paper return, and write “Amnesty” across the top of the return and on the check or money order
- If amending a return, submit the corrected amount on a paper return, and write “Amnesty” across the top of the return and on the check or money order
- If submitting a tax application and registering for the first time, write “Amnesty” on the application, as well as the return and check or money order
The amnesty program is available, with few exceptions, for all state and local taxes and fees administered by the Comptroller. However, the amnesty program does not apply to amounts originally due after April 1, 2012, previously reported taxes that were not paid, and taxes owed for filing periods that are currently under audit.
