North Carolina – Services that Charge a Fee to Apply for a Certificate of Registration

SALT Report 1748 – The North Carolina Department of Revenue issued a warning for taxpayers regarding third-party websites that offer certificates of registration and/or sales and use or resale numbers for a fee.  The Department does not contract this service out to third parties and warns that the certificates that these services provide are often inaccurate and unreliable.  Taxpayers that use these services do so at their own risk.

If you choose to use an online service the Department advises you to:

  • Research the registration requirements in any state where they do business before completing any forms or providing credit card information to third-party vendors; and
  • Verify a vendor’s standing with the Better Business Bureau before purchasing any service

Additionally, the Department reminds taxpayers that the Department does not charge a fee to apply for a certificate of registration or resale number.
