Maine – Use Tax Compliance Program

SALT Report 1797 – Maine Revenue Services issued a Tax Alert regarding the 2012 Maine Use Tax Compliance Program that was recently enacted by the state’s Legislature. The program allows taxpayers to resolve all past use tax obligations by reporting and paying only the highest three years of tax liability accrued between 2006 and 2011.

The program also offers the following incentives:

  • Waiver of all interest and penalties if the tax is paid during the program period
  • Absolves taxpayers from further use tax liabilities incurred prior to January 1, 2012, and
  • Eliminates criminal prosecution and civil penalties related to those taxes

To participate in the program, taxpayers must submit an application to the Department by November 30, 2012.  The application must include all unreported taxable purchases that occurred between January 1, 200, and December 21, 2011. The Department warns that any misrepresentations or omissions will disqualify taxpayers from this program.
