California – Finding the Correct District Tax Rate

SALT Report 1952 – The California State Board of Equalization reminds taxpayers that more than one tax rate may apply in certain zip code areas. Therefore, the BOE is warning taxpayers that if they use zip code location software to determine district tax rates they may be collecting and remitting the wrong tax amounts.

To address this issue, several cities have developed a database to help taxpayers identify addresses that are located within special taxing jurisdictions. The BOE’s website provides links to a number of these city address databases as well as to a free sales and use tax rate locator that enables taxpayers to determine a tax rate for any address in the state.
