Louisiana – Governor Drops Tax Reform Proposal

SALT Report 2360 – Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal announced that he is “parking” his controversial tax reform package. As previously reported in SALT Report 2265, the Governor discussed his administration’s proposal to end state income taxes and broaden the sales tax base by 2014.

However, in his opening speech to the 2013 regular legislative session, the Governor announced that he is no longer pursuing his plan to eliminate income taxes by cutting more than 460 tax loopholes, and expanding the sales tax base by imposing tax on many previously nontaxable services. Instead, the Governor has asked the Legislature to create their own plan that gradually eliminates state income taxes and overhauls the state’s complex tax code.
