Florida – Governor Signs Bill that Creates a Sales Tax Holiday and Exemptions

SALT Report 2525 – Florida Governor Rick Scott has signed an omnibus economic development bill that creates a sales tax holiday and amends two sales and use tax exemptions.

Sales Tax Holiday

The sales tax holiday will be held from August 2, 2013 through August 4, 2013. During that time, the following items can be purchased tax free:

  • Clothing, wallets, or bags, including handbags, backpacks, fanny packs, and diaper bags with a sales price of $75 or less per items; however briefcases, suitcases, and garment bags are excluded
  • School supplies with a sales price of $15 or less per item, and
  • Personal computers and related accessories with a sales price of $750 or less, purchased for non-commercial home or personal use

Sales that occur within a theme park, an entertainment complex, a public lodging establishment, or an airport are not included in the sales tax holiday.

Exemptions

Natural gas used to generate electricity in a non-combustion fuel cell that is used in stationary equipment is exempt from sales tax.

The maximum takeoff weight threshold for rotary wing aircraft that would qualify for the sales and use tax exemption for parts and labor used in repair and maintenance has been reduced from 10,000 pounds to 2,000 pounds.
