California – BOE Clarifies Rate Increase in City of Sacramento

SALT Report 2748 – The California State Board of Equalization issued a Special Notice to clarify the sales and use tax rate increase in the city of Sacramento.  Effective April 1, 2013 the tax rates in Sacramento County are:

  • 8.5% in all areas within Galt city limits,
  • 8.5% in all areas within Sacramento city limits, and
  • 8% in all areas in Sacramento County that are outside the Galt and Sacramento city limits

The notice states that although many areas may have a Sacramento address, they are actually located outside of the city limits, in unincorporated Sacramento County.  Because the tax rates within the City of Sacramento and outside the city limits are different, it is important to verify that you are charging and collecting the proper rate of tax.

Therefore, the BOE has created several ways in which a taxpayer can verify a location:

  • You can visit Sacramento County’s “Cities Within the County” webpage
  •  You can send a message through the BOE’s website and they will verify a location
  • You can call the Sacramento Field Office at 916-227-6700, or
  • You can visit the BOE’s City & County Tax Rates page
