California – BOE Notifies Retailers of Upcoming Visits

SALT Report 2851 – The California State Board of Equalization announced that they have mailed letters to more than 10,800 retailers in the Lake Tahoe and San Francisco Bay areas, as well as to several cities in Southern California notifying them of upcoming visits from Statewide Compliance and Outreach Program (SCOP) teams.

SCOP is designed to increase sales tax compliance by ensuring that all businesses are registered and properly reporting their taxes and fees. The BOE’s intent is to visit every business in the state over time, particularly if a business sells taxable retail items.

Therefore, the BOE advises that as of August 12, 2013 business owners in the following 28 zip codes should expect to receive a SCOP notice:

  • Alta – 95701
  • Applegate – 95703
  • Auburn – 95602 and 95604
  • Bellflower – 90706
  • Berkeley – 94704
  • Colfax – 95713
  • Dutch Flat – 95714
  • Emigrant Gap – 95715
  • Foresthill – 95631
  • Gold Run – 95717
  • Homeland – 92548
  • Huntington Park – 90255
  • Kings Beach – 96143
  • La Crescenta – 91214
  • Loomis – 95650
  • March Air Force Base – 92518
  • Meadow Vista – 95722
  • Moreno Valley – 92551
  • Nuevo – 92567
  • Olympic Valley – 96146
  • Rohnert Park – 94928

  • San Mateo – 94402
  • Tahoe Vista – 96148
  • Weimar – 95736

During a SCOP visit, the team members will verify that all registered retailers and service industry businesses hold the appropriate permits and licenses. If a business is found to be out of compliance they will be given instructions on how to register with the BOE and how to apply for the missing licenses.

If you have received a letter from SCOP you should verify that you have all required licenses and permits in order. You can contact the BOE or your cities’ licensing department if you need assistance doing so.
