Florida – Debit Card Program Allows Teachers to Purchase Supplies Tax-Free

SALT Report 2818 – Florida Governor Rick Scott announced the implementation of the Teacher Classroom Supply Debit Card Program.  The program provides teachers with approximately $250 to spend on classroom supplies.  Purchases made with these debit cards will allow teachers to buy their classroom supplies sales and use tax-free and at a reduced rate.

School supplies that can be purchased with the debit card include, but are not limited to: pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, notebooks, notebook filler paper, legal pads, binders, lunch boxes, construction paper, markers, folders, poster board, composition books, poster paper, scissors, cellophane tape, glue, paste, rulers, computer disks, protractors, compasses, and calculators.

So far, school districts in Broward, Hamilton, Hendry, Jefferson, Levy, and Orange Counties have enrolled in the program.  However, many districts are likely to be added to the list.  Therefore, teachers interested in the debit card program should contact their school district to determine their eligibility.
