SCOP is designed to increase sales tax compliance by ensuring that all businesses are registered and properly reporting their taxes and fees. The BOE’s intent is to visit every business in the state over time, particularly if a business sells taxable retail items.

During a SCOP visit, the team members will verify that all registered retailers and service industry businesses hold the appropriate permits and licenses. If a business is found to be out of compliance they will be given instructions on how to register with the BOE and how to apply for the missing licenses.

If you have received a letter from SCOP you should verify that you have all required licenses and permits in order. You can contact the BOE or your cities’ licensing department if you need assistance doing so.
