California – Use Tax Exemption for Military Personnel

SALT Report 3100 – The California State Board of Equalization released a notice regarding the use tax exemption available to members of the military and their families that will take effect January 1, 2014.

Currently, active duty service members are exempt from paying use tax on vehicles when the purchase is made outside of California, and the use of the vehicle in California is due to a military transfer order. However, Assembly Bill 143 extends the use tax exemption to include any other items such as televisions, computers, or clothing, that were purchased less than 90 days before the military transfer report date.

The use tax exemption provided in Assembly Bill 143 is effective through 2018.
