SALT Report 3155 – The California State Board of Equalization (BOE) recently announced a new rates map utility available on their website. As in other states, local rates can vary from one city to another above and beyond the state rate of 7.5%. For example, the combined sales and use tax rate in Irvine, CA is 8% and the rate in Culver City, CA is 9.5%. Cross city purchases often times leave consumers overpaying or underpaying their local use tax due to the difference between origin and destination rates of the sale and the seller’s method of collection. Caveat emptor.
