SALT Report 3390 – The Statewide Compliance and Outreach Program (SCOP) will be notifying 8,507 business owners in selected zip codes of their upcoming visit. “The visits are intended to educate retailers about properly reporting sales and use tax, increase compliance with tax laws, and maintain outreach efforts to assure taxpayers that the state’s tax system is fair and equal for all Californians.”
This is an important program to be aware of due to the potential misunderstandings employees (state and taxpayer) may have about the objectives of the program. When the SCOP specialist comes to your business, he/she will identify themselves and show identification. Be prepared to verify the existence of a seller’s permit, fee permits, and any other business licenses/permits that may be required. Be proactive with your preparation. SCOP visits are not audits, but they can feel that way.
