Multi-State-Permanent Internet Access Tax Ban Moves Forward In The House

SALT Report 3399 – On June 18, 2014, the House Judiciary Committee members voted 30-4 to move H.R. 3086, the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act  (PITFA) forward for consideration by the House of Representatives.   The PITFA would make the moratorium on internet access taxes permanent by striking out the November 1, 2014 expiration date from the 1998 Internet Freedom Act.  The bill would prevent state and local governments from imposing taxes on internet access and prohibit multiple and discriminatory taxes on electronic commerce.   However, the bill would not prohibit the imposition of sales taxes for online purchases.
