California –San Francisco Proposed Tax On Sugar-Sweetened Beverages To Fund Food And Health Programs

SALT Report 3442 – The proposed tax will appear on the November 2014 ballot and if approved would impose a $0.02 per ounce tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.

These beverages are to include non-alcoholic, non diet beverages that have caloric sweeteners, and have more than 25 calories per 12 ounces.  Beverages not subject to the proposed tax include sweetened beverages with less than 25 calories per 12 ounces, milk and milk alternatives (including non-diary creamers), 100% fruit and/or vegetable juice, infant formula, medical food, supplemental or meal replacement drinks, oral nutrition therapy drinks, or beverages made for weight reduction.
