California – Berkeley First To Pass Soda Tax

SALT Report 3522 – The City of Berkeley, California is the first U.S. city to pass the “soda tax” law.  The new Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Product Distribution Tax will impose a $0.01 per fluid ounce tax on sugar sweetened beverages sold within the City.  The intent of the new law is to reduce diseases caused by the consumption of such drinks and thereby reduce the associated costs.  A similar measure was rejected in San Francisco.
