Salt Report 3552–February 1, 2015 marks the beginning (again) of the online sales and use tax collection requirement in Illinois. Amazon and other ecommerce merchants will now be required to collect and remit 6.25% state tax under the new “e-fairness” law that went into effect on January 1, 2015. Previous versions of the “e-fairness” law turned out to be “unfair” generating a significant amount of litigation. After years in court it appears that the technical deficiencies with the prior law have been resolved. Case closed – collections open.
