Texas – Houston County Sales Tax Collection Significantly Up

BY Greg Phillips

Dothan isn’t alone in its sales tax success.

“Houston County’s sales tax collections last month were up 6.5 percent from the same period last year, and total collections are up 4.8 percent from a year ago.

County officials look at these upticks, which represent transactions from June, primarily as an indicator of the overall economy.

“I don’t think you can put a finger on one thing, it just speaks to the strength of the Dothan-Houston County metro area,” said Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver. “Our community is showing a lot of strength right now. A lot of it, I think, is related to the medical community. We’ve seen significant growth in the economic development area. There are jobs out there for people who want to go out and find jobs, and that’s a sign of a strong economy.”
