SALT Report 3731 – Backers of a proposed Denver sales tax meant to offset some of the costs for college students say the measure is an important investment that will ultimately create a stronger workforce but others say its outside the city’s more basic responsibilities. Supporters of the bill that said Denver’s rapidly-growing economy needs to prepare by engaging Colorado-born workers and helping everyone from low-income to middle-income students have a simpler path to college and offsetting costs that crop up when people can’t go to college or get good jobs. The measure — ballot issue 2A — is a tax that would amount to 8 cents on a $100 purchase and is being campaigned as “College Matters.”
