Multistate – Internet Tax Freedom Act (ITFA) Set To Expire Today (October 1, 2015)

SALT Report 3722 – The ITFA was first passed in 1998 and has been extended and revised along the way. The ITFA prohibits states from subjecting internet access charges to tax and is set to expire on October 1, 2015. House Resolution 235 was introduced at the beginning of the year and some law makers are looking to link the Marketplace Fairness Act up with the permanent exclusion. Failing to extend the moratorium or to adopt a permanent exclusion has the potential to awaken dormant laws across the United States which could immediately subject previously untaxed access charges to tax. Today is the day for some form of action on the part of the law makers or the tax takers. Caveat emptor.
