CALIFORNIA – Alameda Leaders Get Behind Movement To Exempt Tampons From Sales Taxes

City leaders are calling on state officials to end sales taxes on tampons and sanitary napkins, saying the products should be exempt because they promote public health. “It’s really about menstrual equity,” City Councilwoman Malia Vella said. “And while we are doing pretty well in terms of making sure women don’t have to stay at home or be isolated or confined when they have their period, we could do a hell of a lot more for a First World country.” Currently, tampons and other feminine hygiene products are considered “luxury” items, so are subject to state sales taxes.
