New York- Online Shoppers Will Soon Have to Pay Sales Tax in New York

A resolution included in this year’s state budget calls for the so-called marketplace provider tax, which takes effect in June.

All online retailers will be required to collect sales taxes when customers in the Empire State make purchases – preventing out-of-state companies from undercutting local brick-and-mortar stores.

After years of lobbying, the new measure closes a loophole that permitted out-of-state, third-party retailers to sell on online marketplaces to avoid collecting taxes.
