Well, here’s a surprise: sales and use tax collections, which have grown only sluggishly in the past few years despite a buoyant economy, jumped by 12.9% in August.
Another surprise: use tax collections — that is taxes paid on sales outside Virginia, basically from Internet vendors — soared by 44%. More than 1,200 new dealers signed up in August, and more than 31,700 Internet vendors now collect and pay use taxes to Virginia.
