Pennsylvania is imposing a new 1.5% “use tax” on beer sold direct to consumers at breweries starting Tuesday, and some breweries are passing this cost increase onto their customers.
“I just don’t see any other way to go,” said Grant Scorsone, who owns Spoonwood Brewing in Bethel Park. He says the tax will cost Spoonwood about $20,000 a year in profit, which he’d prefer to reinvest in the brewpub.
